The Ride Journal Vll.

The Ride Journal brothers (Phillip & Andrew Diprose) kindly asked me to contribute an illustration for the brand new issue.

I was sent a piece of writing by Laura Williamson based in New Zealand called "The Earth Moved" telling the tale of how cyclists helped the rescue efforts after the devastating earthquake in 2011.

As always the journal is beautifully designed and printed. Full to the brim of illustration, editorial, photography and all tied together through the love of cycling.

2012.

thank, you, christmas, festive, merry, 2012, openhouse, creative, clients, work, retrospective, laurie, king, box hill

Christmas arrives and whilst we await the big man (depending if you've been naughty or nice) to come its also good to reflect on the year past as before you know it we will be toasting 2013.

What a year. I mean WHAT A YEAR.

It was London's opportunity to show how us Brits can do great in the Olympics. We've finally left the recession (apparently!), had a Royal Jubilee to join us with our communities and neighbours and a British winner of the Tour de France.

We've had plenty to celebrate.

It was also the year Openhouse Creative went from being an idea into being something tangible. Since launching we've worked hard at it, made adjustments where necessary but we're proud of it.

Clients have become friends and our family's growing. The opportunities we can offer constantly evolving and as we all work together the end results super good.

Thank you for being a part of it… Heres to 2013…

Oslo.

A week or two ago Anders an old colleague and friend got in touch. A few emails flew back and forth and sparked an exciting project.

Last Tuesday I boarded a plane and headed north. Norway welcomes you with a frozen slap on the face followed by frozen nose hairs which takes a while to get used to.

The warmth and friendliness of the Norweigans thaws out the chill and makes it feel like home.

A small team of 5 (designers, programmers, creatives and all round good beans) and 1 dog have setup a new business in central Oslo called Northern Beat. They've occupied a brand new space and starting their new business.

The brief was to work on a series of illustrations to compliment their new brand image. We're busy working on this now, more soon...

We have been busy doing our part for a brand new show called The Cycle Show produced by Century TV.

We have been working on a bike themed illustration for a chair and sofa that all the celebrities will be perched upon throughout the show. It was hand drawn and painted and then handed over to N Claridge Upholstery to bring the piece to life.

It took to the spotlight on Monday evening presented by Graham Little, Anna Glowinski and guests included Graeme Obree, Nigel Mansell and Gary Fisher. Catch up with Mondays show here.

The great news is that it'll be on the TV again on Monday evening, ITV4, 8PM. Or better still pop down to Look Mum No Hands to watch it being filmed on Sunday.

Ches Perry - Kickstarter.

"Kickstarter nation, I need your help. I want to bring more attention to the lost art of sign painting and through the funding I can generate through these great rewards, I will be able to produce this video and share my 40 years of knowledge with anyone that wants to take-up sign painting or add it to their portfolio or services."

Needless to say we backed this fully. In fact the Openhouse logo is right slap bang in the middle waiting for Ches's steady hand.

I was invited to join an interesting competition by Sardegna - Italy based charity ‘Voce Amica’ (equivalent to the Samaritans in the UK).

The initiative was aimed at promoting creativity and the value of volunteering to help the charity raise funds for their helpline supporting those experiencing emotional distress. I have captured the experience of ‘solitude’ inspired by the brief to explore this human condition with a series of three photographic prints.

The prints showed up later at ‘Il Palazzo della Frumentaria’ in Sassari as part of the final group exhibition.

30 days.

Bike, illustration, failure, blog, post, ashtead, surrey, outdoors, sport, openhouse, thinking

It's difficult to see some things through. Life, excuses, laziness can get in the way.

So I decided to share my little challenge, I tweeted it and popped it up on Facebook. It was simple, to ride my bike every day for the next 30 days, full details here.

Daily life is busy, very busy. No more hours in the day meant I had to change something, so the 5:30 club was formed. Up with the birds and before the roads are full of cars, friends came and went, but mainly it was me, my bike, my thoughts and the countryside. Perfect.

30 days is just right, one month, not too difficult right?

So I thought i'd invite you to try it, set yourself a goal... What will you be starting today for the next 30 days?

Oh and make sure you share it, it'll avoid making excuses.

Surrey in 2012.

surrey in 2012, olympics, laurie, king, artists, richenda, court, dominic, negus, diana, croft, box hill, cavendish, annee, julie, ochre, print, studio, edition

I am very fortunate to be part of "Surrey in 2012" a collaboration between Arts Partnership Surrey and Ochre Print Studio.

I designed artwork inspired by the venue for the Olympic Cycle Race (Box Hill) and my passion for cycling.

Julie Hoyle and Annee Robson at Ochre lovingly hand pulled every print edition. They look amazing!

After a grand launch at the Royal Albert Hall music and arts festival "Go Surrey" the piece is soon to appear in a few galleries over the coming months.

A titled, numbered and signed edition (one of 40) is available to buy for £60 each and a little extra for p&p.

Buy yours from here, here or here.

Business Awards.

business, awards, leatherhead, ashtead, district, 2012, openhouse, creative, laurie, king, runtolive

A month or two ago Run to Live nominated us for an award, we'd worked together on a campaign. We did our bit and invited clients to vote and crossed our fingers.

Yesterday evening we dressed in our finery and headed along to the local business awards at St Johns School. We'd made the shortlist.

We talked with exciting folk and meandered into the dining hall (a bit like Hogwarts without the spells and ghosts). A brief introduction, a lovely dinner and it was time for the awards.

It came to our category and the runners up were Four Gables Dining, wow we still had a chance. Between us and Show Booker

Openhouse was called out. We popped to the front picked up the award and did one of those cheesy grin handshake combos for the photographer.

Fittingly Run to Live won two awards so it was smiles all round.

So what does it mean for us? Well Openhouse is still young, very young. We're learning and this is a indicator that we're getting things right. Those who helped us thank you very much.

The Do Lectures.

do lectures, wales, welsh, speakers, hieatt, lectures, forest, coldatnight, openhouse, laurie, king, alex, heslop

Two or three early evenings, a bag full of warm clothes and a clear head were my preparations for the adventure to the Do Lectures.

For me it started at Heathrow airport where I collected 3 of the fantastic speakers - Joel Buckiewicz called shotgun, Sasha Ditcher middle row and Toshi Nakamura right at the back. Together we hit the road for Fforest camp - with the weather obscuring the views of the Welsh countryside, we used our imagination and conversation flowed.

Arriving at Fforest is magical. Being shown your tent, your tent mates and the bwthyn and that's literally all you need know. Life is simple.

Officially the talks are opened by a few words from co founder David Hieatt joking that after the first night we know who the snorers are, he was right.

The days were spent listening, speakers are well tailored for the event, diverse subjects with the thread of DOing running through the entire weekend. We laugh listening to James Victore, cry with Sean Carasso. Shocked by Chris Heathcote and warmed by Tom Herbert. Andy Puddicombe is calm and collected whilst Tim Smit barely stays on the stage. Inspired by Marion Deuchars and mesmerised by Richard Askwith

The talks are snappy (20-25 minutes) and weighed just right to continue the subjects discussed with speakers/ delegates whilst queuing for my 5th cup of tea of the day.

do lectures, wales, welsh, speakers, hieatt, lectures, forest, coldatnight, openhouse, laurie, king, alex, heslop

One morning I woke with the first light and patter of rain on the canvas roof. I wandered down to make a cup of tea and was welcomed into a workshop, the art of chopping vegetables by Zen priest Edward Espe Brown. Things like this never happen, that's what makes Do a special environment to be in.

Evenings kick off with a delicious meal and wine, sitting opposite a hero my hair standing on end and lump in throat (I won't mention who). Retiring afterwards to music and poetry around the fire pit, the cold and rain not dampening anyones moods. Talking, sharing and singing continues late into the night.

Returning home my head is full of ideas, with a responsibility to see them through. If you have not been then you must…

The good news is they do it all again in September...
Ideas + Energy = Change
